What is EFT and What Does it Look Like in Couples Therapy?

EFT stands for Emotion Focused Therapy and is an approach to therapy that is influenced by the science of attachment and developmental theories of personality and relationships. The healing power of emotional connection is the backbone of EFT and is used to help couples bridge the gap of their varying attachment needs and fears.

Science has proven that emotional connection is paramount not only for healthy and satisfying relationships, but also for one’s individual health. Research studies have gone as far to show that being bonded with a loved one actually acts as a buffer to pain and distress. Therefore, EFT works to increase emotional awareness, foster a secure attachment bond between partners, and emphasize the role emotions play in shaping relationships.

As your couple’s therapist, my role is to facilitate conversations and exercises that identify your specific relationship issues, such as communication difficulties, conflict resolution, and lack of connection. I will lead you through conversations specifically designed to pinpoint the origin of issues and provide an opportunity to heal from hurts that have occurred over the course of the relationship. From there, you and your partner will learn new and more effective methods of resolution and connection. As a couple, you will begin to truly see and know each other on a deeper level.

Some of the most commonly reported benefits of EFT for couples include increased emotional awareness and understanding, improved communication, enhanced intimacy and connection, and a greater resilience to relationship challenges. If these words resonate with you and you find yourself longing for a deeper connection with your partner, I would love to speak with you and help with the next steps. Healthy and fulfilling relationships are crucial to our well-being and I am passionate about helping each of my clients reach their relationship goals.
